Altered Book Journal “Giving it a Second Life” Class
With Izabela Tysver
“Giving it a Second Life” bookbinding workshop invites you to repurpose old hardcover books to create uniquely beautiful books/journals for yourself. We will make the inside pages from scratch using dyeing, collaging, gesso transfers, stitching, and adding found objects. We will decorate the cover using collaging, gesso transfers, stitching, and wiring, as well as adding found objects such as branches or metal pieces. I am open to various techniques in this class as we progress the project. Be prepared to be surprised.
The workshop starts at 9 a.m. and is a day-long event with one one-hour lunch break. The planned finish time is 4 p.m. During that time, we will dive into the creative process, troubleshooting, playing, and having fun while making a book. In my classes, I always invite flow, a nonjudgmental approach to creativity, and fun. The class is open to all levels.
What will we learn, do, and create:
- Repurposing the old hardcover book’s cover
- Creating the new cover using fabrics, glue, and stitching
- Collaging
- Free-flow stitching
- Gesso/glue transfer
- Wiring for decorations and connecting found objects
- Acrylic painting
- Dry brushing
- Repurposing found objects as decoration and mark-making tools
- Mark making
- Creating book signatures
- Bookbinding
- Troubleshooting when things won’t go as planned – that’s the best part of the creative process 😊
A note from Izabela: I know you will finish this class with a final project that you, yourself, may be positively surprised you’ve created. I see it over and over among my students and other creatives. Come to the class with an open-minded attitude and open heart, and be surprised where that takes you. It will be a blast 😊
